72. A Handful of Roses

My inspiration for this design comes from Russian Illumination used on furniture from the 19th century.  A good friend of mine, Anne Burkholder, asked me to paint a chair that matched an old Russian Fighting Rooster Box that she uses as an end table.

I did some research and found some designs that worked really well.  After several hours of work, I fell in love with those designs.  I loved the high contrast, glossy black look, and the gold accents.  They stole my heart.

Since then I’ve painted a few chairs with that design on it, and I just wondered what those flowers would look like larger on a big hand.  I just had to try!
